Renovation quote readiness checklist for BC homeowners

Prepare scope, photos, access, timing, permit questions, and finish selections so renovation quotes are easier to compare.

Reviewed September 17, 2026

Comparable renovation quotes start with a comparable scope. A contractor still needs to inspect and clarify the project, but organized information reduces avoidable assumptions.

Define the outcome and boundaries

List which rooms and systems are included, what stays, what is removed, and what finished result you expect. Note any structural, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, exterior, or accessibility changes.

Prepare useful evidence

Provide room dimensions, wide and detail photos, access constraints, existing drawings, inspection findings, and known property conditions. Do not open assemblies or expose hazards merely to produce a photo.

  • • Room-by-room scope
  • • Measurements labelled as approximate until verified
  • • Finish and fixture selections or allowance expectations
  • • Desired start window and hard deadlines
  • • Occupancy, pets, parking, stairs, and work-hour constraints
  • • Permit, strata, design, or engineering status

Make exclusions visible

Ask how demolition, disposal, protection, cleaning, temporary services, permits, design, taxes, unforeseen conditions, change orders, and warranty are handled. A lower price may simply omit work included elsewhere.

Use a written comparison

Compare the same categories across each proposal rather than only the total. Consumer Protection BC explains that renovation arrangements can be future-performance contracts with legally required information, so review current official guidance before signing.
